September 01, 2025
Attention: Support for Windows 10 officially ends on October 14, 2025. While your PC will continue to function beyond this date, Microsoft will stop delivering essential security patches and technical assistance, putting your system's safety and optimal performance at risk.
Why This Matters for Business Owners
- Heightened Security Threats: Without ongoing updates, your device becomes increasingly vulnerable to cyberattacks, viruses, and malware—jeopardizing your company's critical data. Upgrading your operating system is key to safeguarding your business.
- Software Limitations: As developers optimize software for the latest OS versions, applications may stop working correctly or fail entirely on Windows 10 post-end-of-support.
- Regulatory Compliance Risks: Running outdated systems could lead to violations if your business handles sensitive information or adheres to strict industry standards, possibly resulting in fines or legal challenges.
What Are Your Next Steps?
Microsoft recommends upgrading to Windows 11 before support for Windows 10 ends. However, not all current devices meet Windows 11's strict hardware requirements. Attempting to install Windows 11 on incompatible PCs results in errors.
If your current system is not compatible with Windows 11, consider these options:
- Purchase a new PC that supports Windows 11
- Subscribe to Microsoft's Extended Security Updates (ESU) program (details below)
- Transition to a Linux operating system
- Ignore the deadline and risk your business's security (not advised!)
Regardless of your choice, always back up your important files before making changes to avoid data loss.
Extended Security Support for Windows 10
If upgrading immediately isn't feasible, Microsoft offers the Extended Security Updates program, providing critical security patches for one year past the official end-of-support date.
To enroll in ESU, you can pay a $30 fee or redeem 1,000 Microsoft Reward points. Alternatively, a free option exists but requires activating Windows Backup to sync your settings and files to OneDrive. Note that OneDrive's free 5 GB storage may not suffice if you have extensive data.
Don't delay—registration for ESU must be completed before October 14 to qualify.
